My big effing Lain Post-

I watched the Serial Experiments Lain series through again, bringing along my roommate and another visual artist friend from school. Every Sunday, we lugged a tv and a DVD player up to the visual arts critique space up on the second floor and watched two episodes before lunch. I was really worried about showing the series because it means so much to me that any judgement on it feels like a judgement on myself, as if it is somehow directly related. And I knew the first episodes, the kind of dull introduction, the abstraction of plot, and the repetition of certain scenes would potentially detract my friends from the series.
We sat and watched through, myself falling in love with the characters and the story again and more deeply than before, my friends not saying much. They didn't air their opinions at all, except when I nearly forced them to. I saw confusion build up here and there, but by the last weekend, when we watched the closing three episodes in one sitting, I'm pretty sure they enjoyed it.
I was really broken with the closure, the ultimate heroism of Lain to wholly destroy her ego. It was a martyrdom past death because she didn't get the glory or the fame of merely removing her life. She had to revoke herself, even any hint of the thought of her existence and I felt like suffering for her silent defeat or victory, depending on if one looks from the personal or the general. I carried the tv back to the room and wanted to drop it, wanted to praise a cartoon character for her actions.
Recently, the people with whom I've become most closely associated have all found people they love or enjoy more than they do me. At first, I took it all as injustice, as unfair to me to have to be the forgotten one, the past friend, etc. But then I remember this fictional character who could only better things by completely revoking all memory of her being. I remembered the conversation with her godlike father, with her mirror image/counterpoint perspective, with a best friend who'd never heard of her. This is how I could stop focusing on myself long enough to be happy for people in love, for people with people better than myself.

The only reason I posted this here (I know it seems awkward) is because some of you've seen this series. And for those who haven't, please do. If you can get past the odd animation and focus on the importance of the story, the experimentation in conveying a serious message, and the intensity of the heroic intentions of nearly all of this story's characters, you will be amazed. And I appologize for wasting the time of those who don't care at all.

If it helps (which it probably won't but screw all of you I'll do it anyway) I'll say this:

I was a newbie here myself. Frankly I was following this site way before I even got invited (way before I even met Justin) if only to see the things some of the people would post here...for they are/were a comic bunch of characters. Sadly, a good few of those individuals....Jade, Anji, Zabs, Vonster, for example....do not post nowadays..(much to my sadness). Not that I'm not incredibly flattered to be associated in even some small way (you too McKain) with you all. But it would be nice to see what reactions could be drawn from the people who aren't here anymore...whether by will or by circumstance. The beginning posts of this blog are entertaining....would have been cool to have been a part of that. (Although Small Talk has given me that in one sense).

Take heart Rufus. The grain is not so hard that you'll fly far away.
