I found it here, which is somewhere I've known about for a while. Things weren't always done in the same format, but the use of color has always been a focus. The person who does the site updates pretty much daily, and has gone on for over a thousand illustrations like that. I think that any number before five hundred is not veiwable, either because the person only wants more recent and, I guess, more developed work shown, or it's purely a matter of space preservation. Who knows.

IGNORANT OF THE LAW?
By Anand Ramlogan
anand@tstt.net.tt

The AG issued a press release in last Sunday's Guardian under the headline "Blame UNC for Jamaat issue, Anand!"

She made two points:(1) the judgments were delivered during the tenure of the UNC; and (2) "it is not possible procedurally to plead a set-off in a constitutional motion". She relies on quotations from Ramesh L. Maharaj and Subhas Panday in support of the latter point and criticizes my 'ignorance of the law'.

Nowhere in my column did I suggest that the State could have pleaded a set-off in its case against Bakr. What I said was, that the State having first obtained its judgement for $15 million plus interest and costs, it should have refused to pay Bakr any money on the basis that he was owing 5 times more than the State was owing him. The State was awarded $15 million plus interest and costs on January 15, 2001 while Bakr was awarded $2.1 million some 4 months later may 18, 2001.

Now, I don't really care what Glenda, Ramesh or Subhas says, I maintain that the State was entitled to refuse payment to Bakr and call upon him to pay the outstanding difference. This is good ole plain and simple logical common sense. For anybody to suggest otherwise would make an ass of the law and themselves and simply show up their 'ignorance about the law'.

Morean knows that she was not obliged to pay any money to Bakr. In a letter dated 16th April 2002 her Solicitor General wrote Bakr's Attorney in the following terms:-

"Before the State proceeds to consider your client's request for payment, the Hon. AG has instructed me to ascertain from you your client's proposal for settlement of the judgement against the Jamaat Al Muslimeen in favour of the State in HCA 2294 of 1994"

This letter was exhibited as part of the evidence in the Court of Appeal in an affidavit filed on the 28th May 2002. It is part of the record of the court and is therefore a public document. Why is Morean now trying to mislead the public and fool us into thinking that she had no choice but to pay Bakr? And since when does she rely on Subash and Ramesh to justify her position?

The AG says the judgement was delivered during the UNC. While it is true that the High Court judgement was delivered in 1994, the Jamaat appealed this decision and it wasn't't until the 10th May 2002 that this appeal was dismissed. The PNM assumed office soon after this and since then it has taken no steps to enforce this judgement.

Perhaps the AG thinks she can deflect attention from the real issue by pointing fingers at the UNC. I don't know that the UNC would have enforced this judgement itself (although Panday did stand up to Bakr when he erected the fence around the state lands adjacent to the Jamaat's mosque) but such speculation is of little interest to the population now.

What is important is that the AG realizes that she's been in office for 18 months and all she can say is that she is "exploring her options".

It seem as if the standard PNM response to any problem is to simply divert attention/blame on the UNC and avoid the real issue of what the government's position on the issue is. So, Hindus and Muslims call for a change in the name of the "Trinity Cross" award, Manning replies, "why Panday didn't change it?"

Criminal gangs have taken over Laventille with daily murders and the AG's simplistic response is that this is the result of 6 years of UNC neglect, (as if Laventille was the 'Westmoorings' of Trinidad under the PNM).

You are in power now! Forget Panday, tell us what you are doing. Chanting Panday's name is not going to change the fact that as AG you have done absolutely nothing to enforce a judgement owed to the people of this nation totaling almost $25 million.

While the AG is pretending to think about her options instead of levying on Bakr, the population is beginning to connect the dots.

Bakr boasted on Radio 95.5 FM that his "work" secured victory for the PNM in the marginal seats. Pictures of him celebrating at Baliser house on the night of elections with top PNM officials remind us of his special relationship with the party. He boasts that he is a successful businessman involved in construction, quarrying, and debt collection, among other things. He has a special VIP Priority Bus Route pass because he is a "religious leader".

Petrotrin stated in last week's Sunday Guardian that a company that won a major contract with Petrotrin hired Bakr as a "technical director". He now has official permission to enter Petrotrin's compound. Quarrying on state lands continues without so much as a 'beep' from the AG or Energy Minister. The list just goes on and on.

In the midst of all this madness, Manning tells us there are no sacred cows in the PNM and no one is above the law. There is a lot that can be done with $25 million. That the State hasn't recovered one cent of this money is scandalous. The AG can bob and weave all she likes but the nation can see that the PNM owes Bakr a debt of gratitude that makes him more than just a sacred cow.

Um, I spent a lot of time playing the Enter the Matrix video game. I was actually more impressed that they shot video scenes with the actors to tie it in to the movie than I was with the gameplay. That, and the whole idea of using the simple DOS-based hacking thing for in game secrets and Matrix World side information. Slow motion everything is okay. Bullet dodging like Boris is fun for a while. Agents Smith, Smith, and SMITH get tiresome, especially when they trap you in a corner and gunliftshoot the character to pieces.

And with the movie (Matrix Part Two), I was just left in kind of wonder at some scenes. Wonder at how they were done more than how they looked. I don't understand most of special effects, how they can have a camera outside and inside a car that drives under one flipping exploded through the air. And the Agent Whatshisname smashing that vehicle (though he was very computer generated) and it all scattering to slowpaced car chase. People jumping up over into through everything. Fighting ten version of the same guy, when it wasn't all computer generated, when they actually took the time to meticulously blue screen each falling, flying, flailing Smith.

Has anyone noticed the sci-fi tie-in? Gandalf is Magneto. The fairy prince is Agent Smith. The one (neo=one) is Buddha. I can't remember what movie that has Keaneu Reeves playing Buddha, but it's a laugh/laugh situation.
